History
During a great drought, sage Jabali sought to perform a Yajna for the earth's welfare. He approached Nandini, the divine cow of heaven, for supplies β€” but she arrogantly refused, calling the earth a land of sinners. Enraged, Jabali cursed her to become a river on that very earth. Repentant, she fell at his feet, but the curse could not be undone.

The Mother Goddess instructed Nandini to flow from Kanakachala Mountain; one day She would appear as a Linga encircled by her stream, and that would be Nandini's redemption.

Meanwhile, the demon Arunasura – granted near-immortality by Brahma and protected further by daily Gayatri mantra recitation – had conquered all three worlds. The gods were helpless. The Goddess directed Brihaspathi to visit Arunasura in disguise and turn him away from the Gayatri. He succeeded, convincing the demon that he needed no god. Arunasura abandoned his worship.

Now vulnerable, Arunasura was lured by the Goddess appearing as a beautiful woman in his garden. When he attacked, She vanished into a rock β€” then emerged as a swarm of bees, mortally stinging him. Neither man nor woman, neither god nor demon, a bee's sting was no weapon β€” so Brahma's boon was never violated.

Sage Jabali and the gods gathered to honour the Mother. True to her promise, She incarnated as a Linga in the middle of Nandini's stream, splitting it in two. Nandini was freed from her curse, her twin streams becoming the Goddess's eternal girdle.

That is why champaka flowers, disliked by bees, are not offered here; tender coconut is the Mother's favoured abhisheka; and Yakshagana dance is performed in Her honour.
